Affinities are, essentially, gifts given to fledglings by Nyx. Affinities rarely manifest in the same way, however they do come in certain categories. As the vampyre society is matriarchal, four out of five times, affinities are given to females, however, there is the occasional male who is also gifted.
Vampyres gifted with affinities often end up as high priestesses, warriors, or professors. Many vampyres do not stay near their former House of Night, and many have gone on to become famous in many professions: acting and music, among others.
Nyx will never take back something she's given, and as such, once she has gifted a fledgling with an affinity, they will never lose it. Rather, it will likely become stronger when they complete the Change.
Often, it is the fledglings who don't have affinities that fail to complete the Change and die. However, gifted fledglings do die occasionally, and while it is very uncommon, it happens.
